Learning through Play

Kia ora Parents, Students and Whanau,

Learning through play is a wonderful and valuable teaching strategy. This term we are exploring the concepts of money. If you could help provide some grocery item packages (empty and clean, or even a massive box to make our shop from - like a fridge or washing machine box) for our up and coming grocery store role playing shop, please let me know.

Here's some pictures of the children playing with one of the resources provided in Room 19:

They had so much fun!

I know that we are back to learning from home for a little while due to lock down level 3, so please help make learning fun as well as educational and help your children learn through play. Minecraft, lego, puzzles, board and card games are fun ways to teach your children a multiple range of Maths, Literacy, emotion and physical motor skills.

Let me know if I can help in any way to make learning more fun.

Take care and be safe in your bubbles :)

Market Day Craft Project

Kia Ora Parents, Students and Whanau,

This term we are talking about money. The children are learning:

  • What money is
  • About value
  • Needs vs Wants
  • About NZ's Currency
  • How to make a product
  • Online Shopping
  • Savings Goals
In this term Room 19 will creating T-Shirts to sell for our Market Day. This fundraiser goes towards future Papakura Central School Resources and helping with the Senior Camp.

On Monday the 3rd of August we talked about our design process, and what product the children would like to create. There were some fantastic ideas of what we could make:

  • A wallet
  • A robot
  • Easter Bunny Bag
  • Money Holder
  • Money Bank
  • Dragon
  • Statue
  • Picnic Bag
  • Necklace
  • T-Shirts with a Design
In the end we decided on buying T-Shirts and creating a design for each. In this craft experience every child has a good opportunity to put their own unique ideas down on to a t-shirt.

The next process was to create some brain storming ideas of how the children wanted their t-shirt to look:

The children have done a wonderful job designing their T-shirt pattern concepts. Well done Room 19, I can't wait to develop this idea further with you all.

I am also looking forward to showing all of your families they wonderful end product.

Have a great rest of the week, and keep checking in to see all the other fantastic and exciting ideas and creations of room 19.

Best Regards,

Building Literacy Skills:

Kia Ora Parents/Caregivers, Students and Whanau,

Did you know that reading 6 minutes a day reduces stress by 68 percent?

Did you know that children learn 4,000 to 12,000 words a year from reading?

Learning from home is the perfect time to develop a love and habit of reading daily. Here are some suggestions to help motivate children to read often:

Design a reading log:
  • when children create their own log, they will love filling it in
Goal setting and count down chain:
  • Set a reading goal for a period of time. Every time they finish a book, help them add another paper link to their chain.
Make a reading nook or fort:
  • Get some comfy floor pillows, set them up with blankets and teddies in a corner. Children love curling up with a good book in a cozy environment they have helped create.
Subscribe to a children's magazine or book club:
  • Children love getting mail (especially about topics they find interesting. Book clubs will hold them accountable and increase their excitement about books.
Take books with you:
  • Bring books with you while travelling any where. Children will love to read instead of waiting at appointments, siblings lessons and sports practices.
Visit the library regularly:
  • Using the library can be a fun experience for the whole family. Making a habit of visiting tjhe local library regularly will help establish an interest in reading for everyone. If you can't visit the library, try an online library - google for links.
Try a new reading app:
  • So many reading apps are available for all devices. Just google free reading apps for children or email me and I will send you some links.

Take care and be safe in your bubbles everyone. Check back here soon for our next exciting post!

Best Regards,
